The morning that Numbers disappeared, John would be alone in the house - and then the morning after that, he would wake up in bed in the downstairs bedroom of his new "family's" house, in this case the Smiths (Sans). His room would look as though he'd always lived there, and in the day he was alone in the other house, there would be no trace at all of Numbers. He also wouldn't remember any dreams that previous night.
