( CAREERS AND INCOME. )

Careers and Income

Basic Income

Residents of Sweetwater will find, mysteriously, that they receive monthly envelopes of cash—a sort of universal basic income that places them in the upper middle class stratum that their homes and possessions upon arrival would imply. However, they also have the option of taking on careers for some extra cash, something to do, and possible proximity to plot clues.

Career Mechanics

Careers in Sweetwater follow a fairly realistic structure. Characters need to have experience in the field and prior training to get some jobs, and can obtain training for others.

As was the case in the real 1960s, there is a very large wage gap between characters in the Husband and Wife roles, and not all careers are available to either role. There are also some careers that are off-limits to player characters.

Characters are allowed to run small businesses that do not require a physical location, with mod approval - things like selling bracelets, making clothes, dogwalking, etc. There are no business spaces for rent or sale in Sweetwater.

Income Tiers and Overview

A * indicates previous canon experience and knowledge equivalent to 1960 or later is required; a T indicates that multiple months of IC training are required, but that such is available in-universe. OTJ means that the character will be taught on the job and will learn as they go.

indicates that the position is gender-segregated and off-limits to characters in the Wife role. indicates a very strong hiring bias towards characters in the Wife role; while characters in the Husband role theoretically could have these jobs, they would have to show some sort of prior experience that would make them an excellent candidate to overcome the (townsperson-perceived) gender bias. indicates no clear role preference.

The position of candystriper is only available to 'child' role characters who would be sorted into the 'Wife' role if they were adults. 'Child' role characters may have side jobs in tier 5 or below, with the exception of exercise rider positions above those tiers, which they are also eligible for.

In Depth

Going to be steadily updated as more lore is revealed!

There are a few different options for hospital work: characters who are nurses or doctors in their canons may be the same here as long as their knowledge is within 20 years of 1960's medical advancements; however, there is a strong hiring bias toward Wives. Husbands who already work in EMS may be hired as EMTs, or they may undergo several months of training to become one. Wives may also train to become a nurse aide (or an orderly, if a character is a Husband) and characters in the 'Child' role may choose to give back to their community (and get closer to the hospital) as a candystriper if they will be sorted into the Wife role upon turning 18. Nurses, nurse aides, and orderlies all answer to Ruby Jones, the Sweetwater Hospital's charge nurse.

Characters can attend trade school and subsequently apprentice in standard trades such as plumbing, electricity, etc.

Characters with canon experience around horses can be hired as a stablehand or groom, and characters who canonically can ride at an advanced level (for the sake of this game, defined as galloping and staying on) can work as exercise riders for the show horses. With canon proof of advanced balance/strength (this will have to be approved by mods after examples are shown) in addition to riding skills, characters may work as exercise riders for the racehorses, making a few more dollars per ride than those who work the show horses.
