Part I.

Chapter 1 — December 2023.
Fires We Don't Put Out

★ Sweetwater's very first group of new residents wake up in houses that seem to have always belonged to them.

★ A murderous vacuum salesman barges his way into characters' homes. Only injuries to the head can harm or kill him, and the moment he's dead, a cheery neighbor appears at the front door with a mop and bucket, saying, “I thought you could use a little help cleaning up the mess!” At no point does she stop smiling, or seem to register that it’s a dead body—she just starts mopping up the pool of blood, occasionally dunking her mop into the soapy pink water of the bucket, never referring to it as anything other than the vague “the spill”. If characters ask her for help disposing of the body, she brings in her husband, a similarly cardboard figure who assists the ‘man of the house’ with digging a grave-sized hole in the back yard and dropping the body in. The next day, the ground is undisturbed. This happens to multiple characters - as though there are multiple identical vacuum salesmen.

★ On the 20th, air raid sirens sound across town, and characters are told over the radio and closed-captioning television that an "enemy attack" is imminent and that they must take shelter immediately. Characters either hole up in their basements or take shelter in the large community bunker at the end of Haven Street, where they wait for five hours before the radio announces that the attack has been diverted and they can stand down.
— Player Interaction: Officer Clark shows Wrench (wwrench) a map of the town in relation to the rest of Maryland, as well as indicating where they are in the fallout zone if an atomic bomb hits D.C.
★ On the 22nd, Marjorie Taylor holds a jovial Christmas party as though nothing ever happened.

★ On Christmas day, characters come downstairs to find a few presents at the bottom of the Christmas tree, one for each person in the household, simply addressed "From: Santa". But there's a catch—the wrapping paper is impossible to open, the ribbons are impossible to tie and uncut, until everyone sits down as a family and opens them together in a true representation of an old-fashioned American Christmas morning. Characters receive 1 extra item from their homeworld abiding by the starting inventory guidelines—but the item is something deeply personal, and something that they're uncomfortable with others seeing... which, judging by the similar reaction their new housemates have to their own presents, almost seems to be by design. It could be a compromising photo, a piece of subversive literature, a relic of who they were and things they'd rather remain hidden... but whatever it is, they've now been seen with it.

— Maureen's SOS Attempt — Maureen builds a radio and sends an SOS that is quickly intercepted.
— Testing the Barrier — Arthur, Wrench, and Numbers steal a grocery truck that they've seen leave town to test the theory that the barrier is vehicle-specific. The truck doesn't cross the barrier, and they get arrested, leading to three interrogations. Norman waterboards Arthur and Numbers with Dick assisting him.
